Getting to Langkawi

By Road

Visitors travelling by road have to drive to Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis on the north-western coast of Peninsular Malaysia, the main take-off points by ferry to Langkawi. The journey from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Kedah takes about six hours while Kuala Perlis is an additional hour away. Car parking facilities are available at both jetties.

By Rail

Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) or Malayan Railway provides comfortable and economical rail services from Kuala Lumpur to Alor Setar and Arau. From Alor Setar or Arau, you can take a taxi or bus to Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis respectively and then proceed by ferry to Langkawi. For reservations please contact hours while Kuala Perlis is an additional hour away. Car parking facilities are available at both jetties.

By Air

Langkawi International Airport (Tel: +604 955 1311) at Padang Matsirat is about 20km from Kuah and 8km from the beach resort of Pantai Cenang. Langkawi is easily accessible from Malaysia’s main gateway, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), via the national carrier Malaysia Airlines and Malindo Air. Langkawi is also accessible from the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang via Malindo Air and Firefly. The budget carrier AirAsia flies to Langkawi from KLIA2. Langkawi can also be accessed from other parts of the country such as the neighbouring state of Penang (via AirAsia and Firefly). Visitors from Singapore can fly in to Langkawi via AirAsia and Scoot Air. AirAsia and China Southern connects Langkawi to Guangzhou in China.

By Sea

Ferry Services

Express ferries provide regular services daily to Langkawi from both Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis. The journey to Langkawi from Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis takes about 1 hour 30 minutes and 1 hour 15 minutes respectively. The journey from Penang to Langkawi by ferry takes about 2 hours 30 ­minutes. For enquiries and reservations please contact:

Cruises

A novel way to take a holiday to Langkawi is by cruise ship. Cruises are of varying duration depending on the ports of call en route to Langkawi. Embarkation points are at Port Klang and Singapore. For enquiries on cruise packages, contact your travel agent or the various cruise operators.

Climate

Mean annual temperature is between 24ºC and 33ºC. The dry season is from November to March.

Rent a Car (Hire and Drive)

Self-Drive car rental services are available on the island. Visitors are advised to rent from agencies with valid permits. Remember to drive on the left side of the road in Malaysia. You are advised to look out for wildlife crossing while driving. For foreign visitors, an international driving licence is required.

Non-Working Days

Government offices are closed on Fridays and Saturdays but open on Sundays.

Banks and Money Changers

Banks and money changers are located in Kuah Town and Pantai Cenang. Banks are open from 9.30am to 4pm from Mondays to Fridays.  Money can be changed at most hotels, banks and at the airport.

Phones

Tourists are highly recommended to bring along their own mobile phone. Local sim cards can be purchased at a minimum cost at most convenience stores.

Medical Services

Twenty-four hour medical service is available at Klinik Mahsuri (Tel: +604 961 0961), a 10-minute drive from Kuah Town. Most clinics are located in Kuah.
